The 2019-2020 season was full of outstanding accomplishments for the Blue Ridge School varsity basketball team, including a 30-win season and a second consecutive VISAA Div. II State Championship.

The Barons defeated Norfolk Collegiate 78-68 on February 29th to secure the title. Four players tallied double figures during the game: Junior Michael Gray (19), Senior William Lee (17), Senior Sasha Glushkov (13), and Junior Derrick Jones (12).

Coming off of last season’s title run, Head Coach Cade Lemcke knew the Barons would be the team to beat this season. He told Scrimmage Play, “Our mantra this year was to embrace the target … That’s a big thing because every game we play, the other team, that’s a circled game on their schedule.”

Junior Kobe Jerome told CBS19 News, “This is the most fun I’ve ever had playing basketball. This group of guys is super special and I’m going to miss it next year with our seniors leaving, but I know we still have work to do for next year.”

Senior Andy Nwaoko was injured during Friday night’s semi-final game and could not play during the championship game, but, with the win locked, Coach Lemcke made a substitution during the final seconds. He sent in Nwaoko and fellow Senior Jimmy Yang. Nwaoko told CBS19 News, “That was amazing I can’t explain how I feel about that. That was great. That was my last time on the court, so I’ll never forget that.”
