Nearly seventy bike riders competed in the 8th Annual Ride the Ridge Mountain Bike Race at Blue Ridge School on Saturday, March 28. This race is open to the public and part of the Virginia Off-Road Series. The race was organized by Outdoor Program Director Tony Brown, who was assisted by Outdoor Program leaders Jon Baker, David Welty, Cory Woods and Markley Anderson.
The race is a fund-raiser for World Bicycle Relief, an organization that provides simple, sustainable bicycles to areas of need. The organization is founded on the premise that bikes improve an individual’s access to education, healthcare and economic opportunity as they are an affordable and sustainable method of transportation. They increase carrying capacity while decreasing the time it takes to commute to schools, clinics and markets.
This year’s Ride the Ridge raised $1,300 for World Bicycle Relief.
Several Blue Ridge students competed in the race on Saturday. In the Junior Sport category, which covered eleven miles and 3,000 feet of climbing, Colin Cahill ’15 finished first at 1:56:59.8, Zhou Ziyou ’16 finished second, and Spencer Cook ’17 came in third. Thomas Johnson ’15, Robert Rymer ’17 and David Yang ’18 were other finishers in this category.
