Wills Hands Off Duties as Barons Football Head Coach

James "Jimmy" Wills

After six seasons in St. George, Blue Ridge School’s James “Jimmy” Wills is stepping down as varsity football head coach. Coach Wills joined the squad as offensive coordinator in 2016 and took over as head coach in 2018.

“I will always be grateful for the opportunities Blue Ridge has provided for me and my family,” says Wills. “During my six years as an assistant and head coach, we have experienced a lot of success both on and off the field including two state championship game appearances, a state title, and many student athletes reaching their dreams of playing football at the college level.  Both of my sons graduated Blue Ridge and had amazing experiences during their time as student athletes and student leaders. I will look back with pride at our success as we have created so many wonderful memories. I have had the honor and privilege of working with some of the finest coaches around. I look forward to exploring new challenges and spending more time with my family.”

Wills had an overall record of 18-12 as head coach (including one season cancelled due to the pandemic). The Barons were 6-3 in 2021. During Wills’ tenure the Barons reached the VISAA Division II State Championships twice, with a title win as offensive coordinator in 2016 and runner-up as head coach in 2019. While offensive coordinator, Wills and the Barons won the VIC Championship in 2017.

Headmaster Trip Darrin says, “Jimmy Wills has had a strong record as head coach of the Blue Ridge football team. Most importantly, Coach Wills has taught character through the sport of football. Blue Ridge boys have learned respect, the value of hard work, integrity, and honor through playing for Coach Wills. I wish Jimmy Wills all the best in his next venture and extend my deepest gratitude for his commitment to the Blue Ridge football program these last six years.”

Many Barons have gone on to play at the college level from Wills’ teams, including NCAA Division I players Andy Nwaoko ’20 (Boise State University), Sammy Fort ’19 (University of North Dakota), Xavier Kane ‘19 (Campbell University), and Jahlil Puryear ’17 (Hampton University).

Both of Wills’ sons graduated from Blue Ridge School. His son Tyler Wills, Blue Ridge School Class of 2018, played football for Emory & Henry College and has followed in his father’s footsteps to join the College’s coaching staff. His son Ryan, Class of 2021, attends James Madison University.

Blue Ridge Athletic Director Parker Kirwan adds, “Jimmy’s love for football is evident at every practice, at every game. He is just as comfortable working with our highest caliber players as he is with students who have never played the sport. Jimmy has been a fixture of Blue Ridge School football for many years and we thank him for his dedication to the program.”

Blue Ridge School is beginning a search for a new football head coach for the 2022 season.
