Liam Coyle

9th and 12th grade English teacher, dorm parent, Strength and Conditioning, JV Lacrosse

Liam Coyle joins our English department as the 9th and 12th grade teacher. He will also serve a dorm parent, assist our Strength and Conditioning program, and coach the JV Lacrosse team. Liam grew up in Trumbull, Connecticut, attending the all-boys Fairfield College Preparatory School, before matriculating at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was a two-sport NCAA athlete in lacrosse and football. He holds a master’s degree in Urban Education, and has completed coursework in Divinity Studies, and Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

Liam is joining us after recently returning to the states from the north of Ireland, where he spent a year playing semi-professional Gaelic football. Before Ireland, Liam spent four years teaching in Memphis public schools as a part of the Memphis Teacher Residency program, whose mission is, “Christian love expressed through equal education.”

Liam’s approach to teaching relies on two primary pillars: mindfulness, through simple breath work and focused attention exercises, allowing students to better access their executive functioning faculties; and, the incorporation of rich, coherent content, in hopes of facilitating students’ mastery of technical literacy skills, as well as their engagement in the world of ideas and civic society. Liam’s ultimate hope for his students is that they will know their own story and be able to tell it well, so as to lead an authentic and empowered life, through Blue Ridge and beyond!

Liam is excited and honored to join the Blue Ridge School, to participate meaningfully in our diverse community, and to make his contribution to the development of our young men.

In his free time, Liam enjoys golf, the outdoors, and time with family and friends.
