Applying for Financial Aid
As we move into February, I was reminded once again that the Financial Aid season is upon us with the arrival of my W2 from my employer. I have begun to gather all of the financial documents that my wife and I will need to complete our tax forms for 2010. The Financial Aid Committee is also hard at work preparing for another busy spring.
The Financial Aid process at Blue Ridge is like many other boarding and day schools. It may initially seem overwhelming, but the steps are quite simple. First, each family will need to complete a PFS (Parent’s Financial Statement) with the National Association of Independent Schools’ Student and School Services (commonly referred to as the SSS). This form may be completed online here: http://sss.nais.org/?sn.ItemNumber=142486 . We also have hard copies for those who would prefer them. Please call the Admissions Office and we will be happy to mail one to you.
The SSS will take each PFS and run the figures provided through a computer program. This computer program will generate a report showing an EFC (estimated family contribution) or the amount that the SSS believes a particular family can contribute towards their son’s education. Each PFS will available to the Financial Aid Committee along with the estimated family contribution. Families may also request a copy of the PFS which will have the estimated family contribution listed.
The next step is to send income verification to me, Jamie Miller, at the Blue Ridge School. The Financial Aid Committee typically likes to see a family’s most recently filed tax returns, along with all applicable schedules. We like to have this information available to check back to the PFS and to determine cash flow for each family. Once the PFS is completed and we receive the income verification from a family, the Financial Aid Committee will be able to meet to determine an award.
That’s it! If you have questions about the Financial Aid process, or special circumstances, please do not hesitate to contact Jamie Miller, Director of Financial Aid at (434) 985-2811 ext. 143.
