Preparing Boys for Lifelong Success
Inspiring a transformative journey of discovery and purpose
Built for How Boys Learn Best
Blue Ridge School’s curriculum, faculty, programs—even our all-boys, all-boarding environment—are designed for how boys learn best.
Our curriculum leverages the project-based and relational learning models that are most effective with boys. Project-based learning goes beyond a lecture to include critical thinking, creativity, and hands-on work around the concept, immersing boys in the subject matter. Relational learning builds on the fact that boys learn best from people they connect with and feel are invested in them.
The Blue Ridge School Curriculum
The Blue Ridge School curriculum is designed to give boys a thorough college-prep education, guided by educational models that reflect the ways boys learn best.
The mission of the English Department is to foster critical thinking, creativity, communication skills, and an appreciation of diverse perspectives. The values we seek to instill in our students are integrity, respect, responsibility, discovery, excellence, brotherhood, empathy, and inclusion. We aim to rise to these standards in the following ways. In our classrooms, we explore writers, thinkers, and ideas from diverse cultural, ethnic, racial, and historical backgrounds. We seek to embrace civil discourse with classroom discussions that respect the individuality of each class member. We provide students with opportunities for argumentative & analytical writing as well as reflective and creative writing. Finally, we aim to strike a balance between encouraging the natural talent of each student and maintaining the same high expectations of every person in the room.
The mathematics department at the Blue Ridge School aims to support students in gaining skills in mathematical manipulation, problem solving, and confidence by providing multiple modes of engaging with the content and receiving feedback. Learning goals include building student proficiency in manipulating and solving mathematical expressions, helping students develop confidence and perseverance in solving problems through an informed approach, fostering self-efficacy and self-reliance in solving and understanding mathematical problems, developing abstract and quantitative reasoning skills, encouraging critical-thinking and analytical creativity, and helping boys feel comfortable communicating and working together to solve problems.
The mission of the Blue Ridge School Science Department is to equip students with the mindset and skill set of a scientist. Through curiosity-driven inquiry, critical thinking, and hands-on experimentation, students learn to ask meaningful questions, design and conduct investigations, and analyze data using scientific tools and representations. They develop the ability to evaluate sources, interpret evidence, and communicate their ideas clearly and persuasively. Ultimately, our students grow into informed, responsible citizens of science, prepared to engage thoughtfully with scientific issues and contribute to positive change.
The Social Studies Department at Blue Ridge School offers a dynamic and comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students for engaged citizenship, critical thinking, and a nuanced understanding of the world. Courses span foundational studies in Human Geography and World Cultures to advanced examinations of history and government through AP-level offerings. Students gain essential skills in historical research, source analysis, and evidence-based argumentation, while also exploring diverse cultural, geographical, and political perspectives. With an emphasis on active learning, including project-based activities, debates, and seminar-style discussions, the department equips students to navigate the complexities of the past and present with intellectual curiosity and civic responsibility.
The mission of the Blue Ridge School Spanish Department is to develop students’ communicative and cultural competence, preparing them to participate confidently in a multilingual and multicultural global society. Students build proficiency through interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational communication while gaining an understanding of cultural perspectives, practices, and products. By connecting language study to other disciplines and real-world contexts, students learn to use Spanish in academic and professional settings. Through cultural and linguistic comparison and active participation in multilingual communities at Blue Ridge School and beyond, students grow into thoughtful, culturally aware global citizens.
Our elective offerings are the keystone piece that provides our students with opportunities to develop their cultural and artistic literacy, as well as giving them an appreciation for the uniquely beautiful setting of our school, so that they can become better stewards of their environment and communities at large. Our electives are a large part of what makes our school unique as we engage with the natural environment and learn how to communicate both through traditional artistic methods and the use of current technology.
Project-Based Learning
Learn By Doing
At Blue Ridge School, students engage with real-world problems through meaningful, hands-on projects. By deeply researching their subjects and presenting their work in public showcases, our students achieve a level of mastery that ensures their learning truly sticks.
Relational Learning
Boys Learn Best Through Strong Connections
At Blue Ridge School, learning starts with connection. Because most of our faculty, coaches, and advisors live on campus, they create connections with our boys that a day school simply can’t match. These strong relationships allow our teachers to form the vital bonds that make learning more personal and successful.
Learning Support
Support Designed to Meet Individual Needs
Every boy at Blue Ridge has a path to success. Whether through our small class sizes, supportive environment, and extra help from teachers, or more specialized programs like the Fishburne Learning Center and ELL, our program ensures students don’t just get by, they excel.
Meet the Academic Leadership Team

Blue Ridge School has checked every box a parent could desire. BRS has a diversity in both the teaching staff and in the student body. It has a remarkably low student to teacher ratio, which is realized in most classes and translates into outstanding academic experiences. It has the philosophy and resources to effectively engage and direct boys.”
BRS Parent
Blue Ridge School has completely changed my life. It is by far one of the best schools in Virginia and nationwide. Our culture and diversity is unmatched to that of any other boarding school in the country. It is truly a home to me and all of my classmates, we are truly one big family. That is why we here at Blue Ridge school call ourselves Baron Brothers.”
BRS Sophomore
Both of my sons attended the Blue Ridge School. We sent them two boys and they sent us back men. They graduated from great universities, are married and have settled into great careers. We have many fond memories and cannot recommend the school highly enough.”

I attended Blue Ridge in 1985, 1986 and graduated in 1987. I was a summer school counselor in 1988. It’s like home to me and the best thing that happened to me at that time. It made me who I am today and I made life long friends. The school is exceptional and anyone who is able to attend is truly blessed.”
BRS Alumni
My time at Blue Ridge School has been unforgettable. The outdoor adventures, from hiking scenic trails to bonding with my Baron brothers, have shaped my experience. Exploring the mountains, running the trails, and enjoying the fresh air has given me a deep appreciation for nature.”
BRS Junior
The sense of brotherhood here is incredible, whether through late-night talks, shared challenges, or intense games of football and golf. The thrill of competition, the hard work at practice, and the celebrations after victories have all been unforgettable. Sports taught me teamwork, resilience, and discipline, helping me grow both on and off the field.”
