Music
Letting Your Talent Be Heard
At Blue Ridge School, our music program opens doors to a lifelong appreciation and practice of music.
Students explore a wide range of genres, from timeless classics to contemporary favorites, while learning to listen, perform, and create with confidence. With over 20 instruments to try, they build fundamental skills through patience, practice, and persistence, mastering the techniques and theory that form the foundation of great music. Whether singing in a choir, performing in an ensemble, or composing their own pieces, students discover the joy of making music together and develop the skills to carry their passion beyond Blue Ridge School.
Pillars of a Musical Education
Our music program rests on four key pillars. Students learn to listen deeply and understand the mechanics of music, build technical skills on instruments, and develop confidence in group and solo singing. Together, these pillars give students the tools to create, perform, and enjoy music for a lifetime.
At Blue Ridge School, we broaden students’ musical horizons beyond the algorithm-driven playlists of today. While we support every student’s musical interests, we also introduce them to timeless genres and classic works that have shaped the music world. By exploring a wide range of styles, students learn to listen with open minds and discover the enduring value of great music.
At Blue Ridge School, we demystify the magic of music by revealing the craft behind it. Great performances come from mastering fundamentals—technique, theory, and practice—not from mystery or luck. By understanding how music works, students gain the tools to create, perform, and truly appreciate its power.
With over 20 instruments to explore, students at Blue Ridge School focus on one or two to build lasting skills. Mastery takes patience, practice, and persistence, but by the end of the semester, students will have gained the confidence continue their musical journey beyond school.
Singing together is one of humanity’s oldest and most powerful forms of expression. While not every student will be a soloist, group singing builds confidence, connection, and a lifelong appreciation for shared musical experiences.

Blue Ridge School has checked every box a parent could desire. BRS has a diversity in both the teaching staff and in the student body. It has a remarkably low student to teacher ratio, which is realized in most classes and translates into outstanding academic experiences. It has the philosophy and resources to effectively engage and direct boys.”

I attended Blue Ridge in 1985, 1986 and graduated in 1987. I was a summer school counselor in 1988. It’s like home to me and the best thing that happened to me at that time. It made me who I am today and I made life long friends. The school is exceptional and anyone who is able to attend is truly blessed.”
