Members of the Class of 2017 traveled to Washington, D.C. on March 15 and 16 for the annual senior trip. The seniors were accompanied by Mr. John Young, Mr. James Niederberger, Mr. Patrick Curtin, Mr. Peter Bonds, Ms. Hilde Keldermans and Mr. Parker Kirwan. (This was the fortieth year that Mr. Young and Mr. Niederberger have made this trip!)

They began their experience by dividing into three groups and visiting either the Supreme Court, the Capitol or the Library of Congress. On each tour, the seniors really showed an interest in what the site had to offer including the architecture of the Library of Congress and the significance of the Supreme Court.

An aide from U.S. Representative Tom Garrett’s office gave the third group a tour of the Capitol. This group later met with the representative who spoke to them for several minutes.

Later that afternoon, the entire class gathered on the Senate steps of the Capitol to take a photo with U.S. Senator Tim Kaine, who took time from his busy schedule to meet the seniors. Senator Kaine explained that he is a member of four Senate committees, two of which had met that day on some very serious current issues.

Afterwards, the entire group visited the Lincoln Memorial and other memorials in the area.

Following a wonderful dinner at Pi Pizzeria near their hotel, the seniors and adults thoroughly enjoyed a performance of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” at the historic Ford Theater.

On Thursday, the boys toured the Air and Space Museum, and the Native American Museum as well as Arlington Cemetery where they took a self-guided tour of the Robert E. Lee House and watched the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

The seniors really appreciated the opportunity to spend two full days in our nation’s capital!
